About Woolly Nest

Woolly Nest began with a simple need, to find a more comfortable bed for a dog struggling with arthritis and stiff joints.

Like many people, I first looked at memory foam. It's well known for moulding to the body and providing support and it made sense at the time. But something didn't sit quite right with me. I didn't feel comfortable with synthetic materials, off-gassing and having that in my home, especially for something that my dog would be resting on every day.

That led me to start looking into natural alternatives and I kept coming back to wool.

What I found, though, was that many wool beds didn't feel as soft or inviting as I'd hoped. Most used compressed wool mixes or dense padding, which created a firmer, flatter surface.

With a background as a machinist, I set to work designing and making a bed myself, experimenting with different ways to use wool.

That's when I discovered wool knops.

Unlike compressed wool, wool knops are loose and able to move. They shift and settle around the body, creating a bed that feels full, soft, and gently supportive rather than firm. There's a natural softness to it, something pets seem to instinctively relax into.

The difference in how deeply and comfortably my dog was able to rest became really noticeable.

Over time the wool will settle slightly with use, but it can easily be plumped back up, bringing back that loft and comfort.

From there, Woolly Nest grew into something more than just the inner. I wanted the beds to sit naturally within the home too, not look bulky or out of place, so each one is paired with a carefully chosen range of fabrics, along with more durable options for outdoor use.

Everything is designed and made in New Zealand, with the wool, fabrics, cotton and even the zips sourced from local New Zealand businesses.

It's about creating a better place for pets to rest, and something that feels just as considered in your home.
